CISA Youth Learn, Have Fun & Get Recognized For Their Hard Work
April 21, 2006
On March 25th the City of Phoenix Parks & Recreation department, in collaboration with the Phoenix Workforce Connection, presented the 15th Annual Teen Conference hosted by Phoenix College. There were over 550 youth in attendance at the conference along with city staff and volunteers. CISA staff members, as well as two youth from our Workforce Investment Act program,
were also in attendance.
The morning was full of workshops on a variety of topics, including: healthy eating habits, life after high school, summer job opportunities, and self-esteem. After morning workshops, an organization fair was organized for the youth to visit during lunch. This was designed to introduce them to different resources, schools, and job opportunities. Youth visited booths hosted by community organizations such as the Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates, Phoenix College and Phoenix JobCorps.
Lunch time was also a chance to have a little fun. While a DJ from the local radio station played music, the youth explored the booths and played in the game area which included a rock wall and other fun activities.
One of the CISA youth that attended said that she learned a lot about the issues surrounding teenage sex in one of the workshops, but her favorite part was the lunch and games.
To wrap up the day, a talent show was held with some fierce competition from several local dance teams. A short awards ceremony was held at the end of the day to recognize local teen councils as well as individual youth involved in the Workforce Investment Act programs. CISA was proud to have one of our clients, Daisy, receive an award for “Making Strides” toward a better future. Congratulations, Daisy!
Thanks to all the youth who participated and the staff who volunteered in making this event a great success and great fun.
